Jacksonian Principles
1. Expanded Suffrage
The Jacksonians believed that all white males should be able to vote. By 1820 white mail suffrage was well known.By 1850 the requirements to own property or pay taxes were dropped
2. Manifest Destiny
Manifest Destiny was the belief the Americans should settle the west and to expand control from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. Jacksonians argued for limitations on slavery in the the west in order for white men to flourish. The Whigs (opposition)generally opposed Manifest Destiny and expansion, and was in favor of building up cities.
3. Spoils System
The spoils system placed political supporters into appointed offices (so that no one would go against the party). Many Jacksonians believed that switching political appointees in and out of office was the duty of winning in political contests. The spoils system would encourage political participation by the common man and would make a politician more accountable for poor government service by his appointees. Jacksonians however believed that appointees should be rotated out of office at regular intervals.
4. Position on Government
Jacksonians favored a federal government of limited powers and favored state sovereignty (though not full heartily) The Nullification crisis would soon challenge the favorism Jackson had for the states. This position was one basis for the Jacksonians' opposition to the The Bank of The Unites States. Jacksonians soon stressed expanding federal power and presidential power as they gained more power in the central government.
5. Laissez-faire Economic
Jacksonians generally favored did not want a hands on approach to the economy. In contrast the Whig program was in favor of modernization, railroads, banking, and economic growth.
6. Banking
Jacksonians opposed monopolies to banks which where granted by the government, especially the national bank. Jackson believed that the banks decived the common people; he beileved that only gold and silver was to be used as money.
